Birding on the Steppe

Birding on the Steppe

One of the pleasures of being based in Valencia is the ease of access to many different habitats.  One of our favourite trips takes us up onto the steppe and cereal plains of Castilla de la Mancha, little over an hour´s drive away. I recently had the pleasure of providing a trip to this region for clients Doreen and Jim from the USA.  Both very experienced birders they were on a tour of Spain and wanted to see some of the area´s bird life, particularly on the steppe.  They were staying in the historical town of Xativa, so having met [read more]

Autumn 2017 Bulletin

The Mediterranean summer is finally drawing to a close and despite clear blue skies, we´re starting to put on long sleeves to go out birding! Autumn is a delightful time of the year and the past couple of months have been extremely busy. We´ve been exceptionally fortunate to spend time with some fabulous clients, many on return visits with us. As for the birds, most summer visitors have now headed off for Africa and many winter visitors are beginning to arrive. We´ve also had a few surprise vagrants and rarities and plenty of passage migrants heading south on the East [read more]

Birding the local wetlands

Birding the local wetlands

Last week I was delighted to provide a day trip for a client from New Zealand who was visiting Valencia and wanted to see the local bird species.  A retired vet and therefore extremely knowledgeable naturalist, he was interested to see the birdlife of our region as well as to see how our nature reserves are handled. Having made the short drive from the historic quarter of Valencia, we walked along a dune system, looking onto a system of coastal lagoons. This is obviously migration time, so Barn Swallows were constantly passing through.  The reeds surrounding the lagoons gave views [read more]

Summer Bird Watching in Valencia

Summer Bird Watching in Valencia

This week I had the pleasure of guiding two experienced birders from Denmark.  Although high summer is not the best time of year, it´s very interesting in terms of viewing Mediterranean breeding species. Our clients were also keen on bird life photography, so after I collected them from their hotel in Cullera we drove a short distance through the rice paddies to a field where Collared Pratincoles were breeding.  From a safe distance, as not to disturb them, we enjoyed great views and were able to get some nice photographs of these stunning birds. Meanwhile Gull-billed Terns where feeding in [read more]

Press Trip to the Valencia Region

Press Trip to the Valencia Region

Earlier this month Yanina and I were privileged and delighted to be involved in organising and guiding a press trip to the Valencian Community.  We have long since known that our region is one of the “hidden jewels” of European birding.  Although not so well known, once clients visit our region, the majority return, impressed by the habitat diversity, ease of travel and the amazing bird life that this region offers. As part of ongoing work to highlight our region as a top birding destination, with the support of Turespaña and the Agencia Valenciana de Turisme, Patronato de Turismo Valencia [read more]

Birding trips for families

Birding trips for families

I recently had the pleasure to design a special birding trip for a family from Canada. The most enthusiastic birder of the family was an eight year old girl who wanted to discover the bird life of our wetlands.  It´s always a treat to see such interest from children and young people. They were staying in the rural interior of Castellón at the Eco-Lodge Mar de Fulles, so after I collected them we made the short drive to the coastal wetlands.  On route we stopped by at a local farming area where we enjoyed views of Hoopoe, Little Owl, Southern [read more]

A superb day at Albufera de Valencia.

A superb day at Albufera de Valencia.

A couple of weeks ago, just before the much needed rain storms that we´re currently enjoying, I provided a trip to Albufera de Valencia for a couple of regular clients. As they are frequent clients, we opted to spend the morning in just one reserve area and focus on what we could see there.  The day began with a treat as hundreds of Greater Flamingoes passed low overhead, providing a real spectacle.  They were soon followed by a Buzzard and then a small group of Booted Eagles, both pale and dark phase. The lagoons held Purple Swamphens in good numbers, as [read more]

2-Day Bird Watching Break : Mountains & Albufera

2-Day Bird Watching Break : Mountains & Albufera

Day 1 – Mountains A few days ago, I was delighted to provide a 2-day bird watching break to the mountains and to Albufera de Valencia for two experienced birders from USA. They were keen to discover some of the habitats and birdlife of our region. Having collected them from their apartment in central Valencia, we drove for less than one hour to a great gorge in the mountains to search for some target species. As soon as we parked, we had an amazing welcome from a Blue Rock Thrush standing on top of a ruined building controlling its territory. [read more]

2-Day Birding Break on the Steppe and in Albufera

2-Day Birding Break on the Steppe and in Albufera

A few days ago, I had the pleasure of providing a 2-day birding break on the steppe and in Albufera de Valencia for a family from Slovenia.  However, the real birder of the group was Maks, a 14 year-old boy with an amazing knowledge. Day 1 – Steppe Having collected them from their hotel in the city, we made the journey inland and up onto the high steppe area close to Valencia.  After a morning coffee stop and a briefing on the species that we were likely to see, we headed across the rolling plains where had great views of [read more]

Birding the Wetlands of Valencia

Birding the Wetlands of Valencia

Last week, I provided a day of guided bird watching for a client from UK.  Phil is an experienced and knowledgeable birder and wanted to see the diversity of the birdlife that exists here in Valencia. We decided upon a specific wetland area as right now there are colonies of breeding species that provide some super opportunities for observation, all without the risk of disturbance. We met close to Valencia and made the short journey to the coastal site where we began the day by exploring a few coastal saltwater lagoons.  Here we had good views of White Headed Duck, [read more]

An amazing day at Valencia´s wetlands.

An amazing day at Valencia´s wetlands.

Last week, I was especially delighted to welcome back returning clients Steve, Melanie and their son Adam.  We provided a day of guided birding for them at Albufera de Valencia last winter, and had discussed the options for a Spring trip.  Their timing was perfect as many summer visitors were either passing through or had already settled in readiness to breed.  The coastal wetlands of Valencia are spectacular in Spring, and today was to prove amazing.  Numbers aren´t everything, but by the end of the day, we´d totalled over 70 species. Little Ringed Plover Our day began with a walk [read more]

Fabulous Spring birding on the Steppe

Fabulous Spring birding on the Steppe

Over the Easter weekend, I enjoyed a super day on the steppe with two returning clients from Belgium.  Both very keen birders, they were eager to see the fabulous species that this unique habitat holds.  Within just over an hour´s drive from Valencia, the high steppe and lagoons provide a completely different habitat from those found at the coast or the mountains. Our first stop beside an area of floodwater gave views of Avocet, Little Ringed Plover, Snipe and a huge flock of Yellow Wagtail.  The day had started well, and although quite windy, the next stop gave views of [read more]

7 Day Guided Birding Trip - Day 1 (Salt Marshes & Lagoons)

7 Day Guided Birding Trip – Day 1 (Salt Marshes & Lagoons)

The huge habitat diversity of the Valencia region of Spain allows us to provide a superb 7 days birding holiday.  In late February of this year, we were fortunate to deliver exactly that for Gourmet Birds, a well established specialist bird watching holiday provider from UK. We´d worked very closely with them to design a bespoke trip, taking in some of the region´s best birding venues and carefully selected accommodation to hopefully result in a memorable trip. Day 1 – Salt Marshes and Lagoons The group arrived relatively early into Alicante airport.  Therefore, without wanting to make the first day [read more]
