2 Day Bird Watching Break: Steppe and Coastal Wetlands

A few days ago, I had the pleasure of providing a 2-day birding break to the steppe and to the coastal wetlands for returning clients from UK.  Joy and Margaret are experienced birders who had been birding with us before at Albufera de Valencia and they wanted to explore new habitats and areas close to Valencia City where they were staying. Day 1 – Steppe Having collected them from their hotel in the city, we made the journey inland and up onto the high steppe area close to Valencia.  After a morning coffee stop and a briefing on the species that we were likely to see, we headed across the rolling plains where had great views of Crested Lark and Hoopoe. But what was surely by far the most impressive was a Golden Eagle flying directly over us. The lagoons were magnificent, with White-headed Ducks and Black-necked Grebe. On the way to the high steppe area we spotted a Lesser Kestrel recently arrived from Africa, and a good sized flock of Calandra Lark. Of course the goal of the day was the Great Bustard and we managed to see plenty…

Guided Bird watching trip to the Steppe

A few days ago, I was delighted to provide a guided bird watching trip to the steppe area for an experience birder from England who was very interested to see the steppe birds of Spain whilst he was on holiday in Benidorm.                               Having collected him from his hotel in Valencia city, we made the journey inland and up onto the high plateau of Castilla de la Mancha.  After a morning coffee stop and a briefing on the species that we were likely to see, we headed across the rolling plains where had great views of Great Bustards, Crested Lark and Calandra Lark.                               The next stop was in a farm area where we enjoyed some typical species including Skylark, Rock Sparrow and Corn Bunting. Before we headed up onto the higher steppe, we made a brief stop to see Granes in flight, two pairs of Little Owls and Southern Iberian Shrikes. The high steppe eventually gave us views of one of…

2-Day Birding Break on the Steppe and in Albufera

A few days ago, I had the pleasure of providing a 2-day birding break on the steppe and in Albufera de Valencia for a family from Slovenia.  However, the real birder of the group was Maks, a 14 year-old boy with an amazing knowledge. The first lagoon held Greater Flamingoes and Lesser Black backed Gulls.  We stopped by an old farm where we enjoyed views of Corn Buntings, Rock Sparrows and Spotless Starlings. The high steppe eventually gave us views of one of the day´s key species – the Great Bustard.  Initially we spotted two males, albeit at long range.  Then our patience was rewarded with great views of a group of 12 birds.  At the same time, we were also fortunate enough to see two Little Bustard, and Little…

Bird watching on the steppe of Spain

Last week, I enjoyed a fantastic day with a couple of returning clients from Canada.  They had a trip with us few days ago, when we enjoyed a day in the coastal wetlands of Valencia.  This time, they were keen to have a day of guided bird watching on the steppe of Spain. After a chat over morning coffee, we made the relatively short journey into the rolling plains of Castilla de la Mancha. One of our main target species was the Great Bustard, which would be a lifer for them both.  We stopped in a favourite location where we often get views of these magnificent creatures, and patiently scanned the surrounding fields.  After some 15 minutes, we were rewarded with some fantastic views of a group of male Great Bustards, strolling through the fields and feeding under a stand of trees.  As we enjoyed the autumn sunshine, a Red Kite suddenly came into view, and circled overhead, giving some wonderful views. Crested Larks and Skylarks flitted around us, whilst we enjoyed views of Greater Flamingo and Avocet in a nearby area of flooded fields.  Then a male Lesser Kestrel…

Steppe birds of Spain

Earlier this week, Yanina and I were delighted to provide a day of guided birding for a couple of returning clients from UK.  Dave and Kate booked a day with us last year, when they enjoyed the bird life of Albufera de Valencia.  Their return trip was to enjoy the steppe birds of Spàin, so we´d arranged to visit Castilla de la Mancha. After the usual coffee stop and chat about the target species, we headed for the vast plains of this harsh but beautiful region.  There was a cool wind blowing, but we´d come prepared for the cold so parked the car at a favourite vantage point and enjoyed views of Crested Lark, Skylark, Stonechat and Black Redstart. The first lagoon of the day gave great views of Water Pipit as well as wildfowl including Red Crested Pochard, Shoveler, Teal and Shelduck.  We then visited another small body of water where we´d recently seen the very rare Red Crested Coot.  After a little scanning of a small group of Common Coot, did did indeed find it again. The wind was now becoming quite cool so we headed back to…

Birding on the Steppe of Spain

Last week, Dave and I enjoyed a fantastic day with a couple of returning clients from UK.  They had a trip with us in the Spring, when we enjoyed a day in the mountains of Valencia.  This time, they were keen to have a day of guided birding on the steppe of Spain. It was a pleasure to see Jan & Ossie again, and to catch up on our respective conservation projects, particularly with owls.
